Chapter Nineteen

“I need the loo. I won’t be a minute.” Evie pushed her cup away from her and slid out of the booth.

“I’ll be here,” Ash said and grinned.

There was that gorgeous smile; the one Evie could get used to seeing regularly. “I hope so.” She’d seen the toilet sign and headed that way, conscious to sashay her way there. She didn’t fall to the temptation of glancing over her shoulder to see if Ash had peered around the booth to watch her walk away. Ash had been sufficiently attentive for Evie to be assured that would be the case.

She glanced at the mirror before entering one of the toilet stalls. She’d been concerned that the odd tear had fallen during several of Ash’s stories and that they may have ruined her eye make-up, but everything was in order. Evie had been excited to learn Ash wasn’t as young as she’d originally thought. Silly, but seven years difference didn’t seem anywhere near as bad as over a decade. There was still a great deal of life experience and change that happened during one’s twenties, but Ash was halfway through that, and her personal life experience had made her more mature than the average twenty-five-year-old.

The afternoon was going far better than she’d expected. Over the past two weeks, Evie had vacillated over whether or not to even have this date. After the straight forward conversation she’d had with Harriet, doubts had begun to creep in, and Evie got hung up on the age gap again. Not only that, but she’d all but decided that they wouldn’t have enough in common for a friendship, let alone a relationship. In fact, she wasn’t sure why she’d fooled herself into thinking that a friendship would happen in the first place. Intimate relationships often blossomed from friendships, but what interests could she possibly share with Ash anyway? Aside from carnal ones. But when that inevitably slowed, or rather, was no longer the primary focus of the relationship, it was the things two people shared an outlook on that nourished that connection.

She returned to the mirror and looked at herself steadily. She’d been enjoying Ash’s company so much that she’d deliberately parked the second main topic of conversation, and that was far from ideal. She glanced at her watch. They were two hours into their date, and the end of daylight curfew was a little over an hour away. She’d spent enough time with Ash to be sure there was more than an incredible sexual connection. She was charming, funny, talented, and had a heart of gold. Her career choice and Java’s rescue attested to that. The elephant in the room loomed large, threatening to ruin everything that a relationship with Ash could entail.

Oh, well. It had to be done. The question was, how? A little poking around and testing of the water, or a straight forward plunge into the potentially icy abyss? Evie took a deep breath and headed back to their table. Ash had chosen to work with kids.
